Here’s some information to help you make an educated decision about which Hamster will fit your family.

Russian Dwarf Hamster or Fancy Russian Dwarf Hamster

Russian Dwarf Hamster or Fancy Russian Dwarf Hamster

The Russian Dwarf Hamster is shaped like a bullet and is about 3-4 inches long (males are usually slightly larger than females). Several color varieties are available. Russian Dwarf Hamsters will either have the typical short-haired coat or a more satin coat with a high, glossy sheen (as in the case of the Fancy Russian Dwarf Hamster). They have thick hair covering their feet.

Russian Dwarf Hamsters are fairly energetic and can be kept in same-sex pairs or in groups if they are all raised together.

With consistent interaction, these species are relatively easy to tame. Once tamed, they are friendly, confident, and curious. They are active and like to move around, so, even though they’re small, they need a habitat that provides plenty of room.

This hamster species will typically live for about 2-3 years.

Robo Dwarf Hamster

Robo Dwarf Hamster

Robo Dwarf Hamsters (Robo is short for Roborovskii) are the smallest species of pet hamster measuring in at an average of 2 inches long. They are sandy brown with a white belly and white marks above their eyes that look like eyebrows.

They are also the fastest of the bunch and are extremely active—something to consider if you’re looking for a pet for your children. Kids love to handle their pets and Robo Hamsters can be tricky to keep hold of! It’s possible for them to jump as high as a foot.

Robo Dwarf Hamsters are best housed in a large habitat that features enough activity centers and accessories to keep them busy. They are always up to something and are ideal if you are looking for a pet that’s fun to watch, but requires less personal handling.

You can even house more than one Robo Dwarf Hamster together provided that your habitat is big enough.

The Robo Dwarf Hamster can live up to 3-4 years.

Winter White Hamster

Winter White Hamster

This hamster is about 4 inches long and is gray with a white belly, and a thick gray stripe running down its back and its furry feet. This hamster earned its name because its coat turns almost completely white during winter (when the hours of daylight decrease). This hamster’s tail is short—you’ll hardly be able to see it.

With consistent handling, your Winter White Hamster can become relatively tame, making this species a friendly, confident and curious pet. They are an active species and like to run about—so be prepared to give them enough room to run even though they’re small.

This hamster species will typically live for about 2-3 years.

Chinese Hamster

Chinese Hamster

The Chinese Hamster is about 4-5 inches long with silky gray-brown fur and a black stripe down its back. Some people mistake these hamsters for mice because they have a longer tail than other hamsters. This makes the Chinese Dwarf Hamster a good jumper and climber in comparison to other hamsters.

This hamster species will typically live for about 2-3 years.

Chinese Hamsters are not available in all states.
